A facelift is no doubt one of the most common ways surgical patients enhance their looks. After all, your face is what people see first. It is the cornerstone of your first impression. We all want to look and feel great, and facelifts can make this happen by taking years off your face, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.

But like any other surgical procedure, you likely have questions. Here we provide some of the most frequently asked facelift questions patients ask.

Will it be obvious to others that I’ve had surgery?
No, as long as the procedure is performed correctly there won’t be any obvious signs of surgery. A good surgeon won’t leave any scarring or other surgical indications of your procedure. One of the most common requests we get from patients is to make their facelift look natural, and that is certainly achievable.

How painful is a facelift?
A typical facelift surgery comes with a moderate amount of discomfort. Very few of our patients have indicated great pain. The discomfort, however, subsides within a few weeks. Most patients say the discomfort is only a minor inconvenience to reach their cosmetic goals.

How long is the typical recovery period?
In most instances, patients can resume normal activities within 7 to 10 days. We do advise, however, that people typically avoid strenuous activity for the first three weeks. Like any procedure though, these recovery times will vary by patient. Your healing time will depend on how well your body recovers as well as the type of procedure you want.

What kinds of facelifts are available?
There are two main types of facelift surgeries, the mini-lift and the mid-lift.

The mini-lift is designed to give patients a youthful appearance in their cheeks, lower eyelids and midface areas. It is designed to establish facial balance and give an overall youthful look in the lower third area of your face.

The mid-lift focuses on the triangular shape of your face, the area beneath the two corners of your eyes and the corner of your mouth. This is one of the most common procedures because this area is one that tends to show the first signs of aging. Essentially, it can reposition the underlying fat and muscles on a person’s face.

Am I a good candidate?
Candidates are typically evaluated during consultation meetings. In general, you should be physically and psychologically healthy and have a goal of improvement rather than perfection.
